THE RED CHALK (SANGUINE)

The sanguine is the primordial pencil. The noun pencil (in Italian ‘matita’) comes from the hematite, a mineral rich in iron oxide and red tracer, mostly known as Sanguine. In the 1500s, people considered the sanguine as pencil, and by extension, only then the terms covered also the graphite.

Lorenzo Zangheri uses it not only since it represents a luster Italian past, nor for emulating ancient masters or for paying homage to the previous-century scenographers; he chose this since it is the soul of drawings: throughout the years, it has been used since it lights up artworks, also with shadows. It makes the drawings come to life and provides personality to them.

Lorenzo mostly uses three types: Sanguine oil, XVIII century Sanguine, and Medici Sanguine.
